Huddersfield
A town with strong traditions and attractive buildings,
surrounded by outstanding countryside.
Huddersfield's reputation was built around the textile industry,
and its fine woolen worsteds are still sent around the world.
Today the town is well known for its award winning festivals
and artistic reputation.
Architecturally, Huddersfield boasts fine Victorian Buildings,
many of which have been restored to their original splendour,
as well as pioneering new designs such as the McAlpine Stadium,
RIBA
Building of the year.
Huddersfield Heritage Town Trail, which explores the many interesting
and attractive buildings in the town centre, and a town guide
are available from the Tourist Information Centre.
Standing above the town is Castle Hill, which affords panoramic
views across Huddersfield and beyond. The Victoria Tower celebrates
the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria's Coronation.
Dewsbury
Dewsbury's earliest roots date back to 627AD when St Paulinus
founded a Christian settlement on the banks of the River Calder.
Later Patrick Bronte, father of the famous sisters, was curate
in the town.
Dewsbury developed rapidly during the industrial era with the
expansion in textile manufacturing, particularly the innovative
recycling of old cloth into new products such as blankets, rugs
and heavy outerwear.
Many grand Victorian buildings arose from the resulting prosperity,
amongst them the resplendent town hall.
Dewsbury Market is one of the largest in West Yorkshire specialising
in fabrics and clothing. (Town guide available).
Batley
The town is mentioned in the Doomsday Book, when it's population was
just forty. Like most of the area, Batley prospered as the textile
industry boomed. The cobbled market square and fine surrounding
buildings are classed as an 'outstanding conservation area'.
Much refurbishment of the Victorian architecture has taken place and
new uses found for many buildings including the Yorkshire Mill
Village and nearby Motor Museum. A town trail is available to guide
you around the fine buildings in the centre of Batley.
Just in case you were wondering, the well known Batley Variety Club
lives on in the form of a popular nightclub!.
